DESCRIPTION

MODEST URGELL I INGLADA (Barcelona, 1839–1919).
"Village Street."
Oil on canvas.
Signed.
Condition: features reinforcement strips and patches on the back.
Measurements: 50 x 80 cm; 62.5 x 93 cm (frame).

"Village Street," set in a Catalan setting, is rendered with the melancholic restraint characteristic of Modest Urgell’s work. The composition is organized from an ascending perspective, flanked by stone walls, staircases, dark openings, and a tall building on the side that visually encloses the scene. In the background, two small human figures introduce a note of quiet, almost anecdotal life, accentuating the monumental and solitary scale of the architecture.

The scene is fully immersed in the artist’s poetic universe: solitary spaces, humble architecture, silent paths, and a sense of time standing still. The work stands out for its restrained atmosphere and the painterly treatment of its surfaces. Urgell constructs the walls using a thick, earthy brushstroke, rich in ochres, browns, and grays, which conveys the roughness of the stone and the passage of time on rural architecture. In contrast to this material density, the sky opens up in a light palette of whites, pinks, and pale blues, rendered with a lighter brushstroke that lends luminosity and depth to the composition.

Modest Urgell i Inglada was one of the leading figures in Catalan painting during the second half of the 19th century. Trained at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona, he developed a personal style, with a symbolist and romantic tone, focused on solitary landscapes, rural scenes, cemeteries, hermitages, and seascapes with a melancholic atmosphere. He also taught at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona, where he exerted a significant influence on subsequent generations. His work is represented in institutions such as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Museu d’Art de Girona, and the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer, among other public collections.
