The new genre painting of the 19th and early 20th centuries emerged as a way to interpret a growing sense of national consciousness, now present among the middle class as it advanced toward social dominance. To a certain extent, the painters’ concern was to deepen the understanding of their country through a language—that of painting—that everyone could comprehend, thereby helping the common people grasp the nature and meaning of their nationality, especially as it had manifested in the recent past, still vivid in the memory of the older generation.
The focus on depicting everyday life, traditional clothing, and the rural setting brings this work closer to the tradition of genre painting that developed in Italy and spread widely throughout Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, where scenes of everyday life take precedence over any narrative or religious content.
