DESCRIPTION
ÉMILE GUDIN (Nancy, France, 1874–1957).
“View of Mousson.”
Oil on panel.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 38 x 54 cm; 50 x 67 cm (with frame).
The work offers a sweeping panoramic view of Mousson, a town in the French region of Lorraine, seen from an elevated vantage point. The village, recognizable by its reddish roofs and the church tower, stretches out among patches of vegetation and open fields, while the hills gently frame the horizon.
The loose, textured brushstrokes, together with a palette dominated by greens, ochres, and veiled blues, create a luminous and slightly misty atmosphere. The small red accents in the foreground and on the rooftops enliven the landscape and draw the eye toward the village center, which is harmoniously integrated into the natural surroundings.
Émile Gudin was a French painter and watercolorist. Born and died in Nancy, he trained under Jules Adler and Royer and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français.
