The work belongs to the most refined strand of nineteenth-century Orientalism, which transformed North African and Near Eastern interiors into settings of intimacy, material wealth, and chromatic sophistication. The scene reflects the harem imagery popular among 19th-century European collectors, though it stands out for its particularly meticulous composition, in which the decorative setting takes on as much significance as the figures themselves.

The large fan creates a powerful diagonal that organizes the composition and visually connects the young servant with the reclining figure. In contrast to this ascending line, the sinuous posture of the female figure introduces a leisurely rhythm, reinforced by the drape of the veils and the overlapping fabrics. The palette of reds, ochres, and golds, enriched by greens and pearly whites, allows the painter to revel in the different qualities of the silks, jewels, metals, and carved furniture.

Beyond its narrative appeal, the painting reveals a preciousist sensibility evident in the meticulous rendering of the ornaments, the reflections on the metal objects, and the treatment of transparencies.
