This portrait of a woman is a magnificent example of Alfredo Souto’s most refined work as a chronicler of bourgeois society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image evokes the sophisticated atmosphere of the theaters and salons of the Belle Époque. Although Alfredo Souto successfully pursued history painting, genre painting, and landscape painting, it was in portraiture that he achieved some of his most brilliant works. During the final decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th, the rise of the bourgeoisie made portraiture one of the most sought-after genres, intended both to affirm social prestige and to reflect the refinement and modernity of a new affluent class.

Souto perfectly captured this new aesthetic. His portraits are distinguished by the elegance of the poses, the meticulous rendering of the clothing, and his ability to capture the subject’s personality beyond mere physical resemblance. In many of his female figures, one can see the influence of contemporary Parisian painting, particularly that of artists such as Giovanni Boldini, Raimundo de Madrazo, and Paul-César Helleu, who elevated the female portrait to a symbol of sophistication and modernity.

Alfredo Souto Cuero was one of the most prominent painters of the turn of the century. Initially trained at the School of Fine Arts in A Coruña, he completed his studies in Madrid and later in Paris, where he came into contact with the Naturalist and Impressionist movements that would decisively shape his pictorial language. He successfully pursued portraiture, landscape, and genre painting, regularly participating in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions and receiving various official honors. His work stands out for the elegance of his drawing, the fluidity of his brushstrokes, and a special sensitivity to light and the psychology of his subjects. His works are part of major public and private collections, including those of the Museum of Fine Arts in A Coruña and other Spanish institutions, cementing his position as one of the most notable portraitists in Spanish painting of the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
