In this work with an Orientalist theme, José Navarro Llorens depicts an everyday scene from an Arab market—one of the subjects that most captivated him following his travels to North Africa. The artist approaches this world through a deeply luminous and colorful perspective, capturing the movement of the souks, the architecture, and the human presence with a nimble and vibrant brushstroke.
José Navarro Llorens was a Valencian painter trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in his hometown. In 1895, he participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where he received an honorable mention, coinciding with the recognition of his friend Joaquín Sorolla. Modest by nature and keeping his distance from the major official art circles, he spent much of his career working locally, focusing on scenes of everyday life, romantic themes, and Orientalist painting.Influenced by artists such as Mariano Fortuny and the Valencian Luminist movement, he traveled to Morocco, where he found inspiration in its landscapes and people. He later traveled to Brazil, where he held a well-received exhibition, though he eventually returned to Valencia, settling in Godella, where he devoted himself to painting and teaching. His work is characterized by a luminous and expressive realism, rooted in the power of Mediterranean light, chromatic hallmarks, and a vibrant brushstroke. His works are currently held in collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga, and other public and private collections.
