Within José Benlliure’s extensive body of work, his fantastical paintings represent one of his most personal and evocative strands, in which the artist delves into the realms of late Romanticism, Symbolism, and the visionary tradition of the 19th century. Developed particularly during his years in Rome, this facet reveals his interest in the supernatural, superstition, and imaginary worlds, giving rise to compositions of great narrative power and extraordinary technical richness, among which his scenes of covens, apparitions, and hellish visions stand out.

In “Witches’ Coven,” Benlliure constructs a scene of a distinctly theatrical and dreamlike nature, set inside a grotto shrouded in twilight. At the center of the composition, a steaming cauldron serves as the focal point of a supernatural apparition: from within it emerges a luminous vision composed of ethereal female figures ascending amid vapors and radiance, establishing a powerful contrast between the earthly world and the realm of fantasy. On the right, an elderly man with a long white beard presides over the ritual, depicted as a possible necromancer or occult sage, while in the foreground a multitude of grotesque and spectral beings unfolds: witches with deformed faces, hooded figures, demons, and phantasmagorical creatures participating in the ritual scene.

The composition incorporates numerous elements linked to the nineteenth-century esoteric imagination—the cauldron, the fire, nocturnal creatures, and supernatural beings—which Benlliure renders with remarkable descriptive skill and a profound sensitivity to the fantastic. The use of chiaroscuro, drawing on both the Goyesque tradition and tenebrism, structures the scene through the interplay between the earthy shadows of the cavern and the intense beams of light emanating from the fire and the central apparition. This treatment of light, combined with the dynamism of the figures and the theatrical nature of the composition, makes the work an exceptional example of José Benlliure’s most imaginative and least-known side.

The brother of painter Juan Antonio and sculptor Mariano, José Benlliure focused on genre scenes and portraiture. He began his artistic studies under Francisco Domingo in Valencia, then continued his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. In 1879, he moved to Rome, where he served as director of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts from 1903 to 1913. In 1897, he traveled to Tangier, Algeria, and Morocco, where he produced brighter, freer works influenced by Impressionism. Beginning in 1900, his work depicted popular themes. He was an honest and sensitive painter, and his works on popular themes—such as the one presented here, with scenes rendered in a direct and spontaneous manner—were particularly notable. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, winning third-place medals in the 1876 and 1878 editions and first place in the 1887 edition. He was a member of the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan), and Munich. The most significant part of his body of work is preserved in Valencia, at his House Museum and the San Pío V Museum of Fine Arts. His works are also represented at the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and the Palace of Charles V in Granada, among others.
