The study of light effects is one of the most personal aspects of Lluís Graner’s painting. In this work, the flame with which the old man lights his pipe serves as the sole source of light, transforming an everyday action into a scene of intense concentration. The subject belongs to the painter’s costumbrista and naturalist style, typically featuring ordinary people depicted in dark interiors. The Prado Museum specifically highlights his constant exploration of the hallmarks of light and shadow, which is akin to a modern interpretation of Baroque tenebrism.

The composition focuses on the face, beard, and hands, illuminated by orange-hued highlights that gradually emerge from the darkness. The upward lighting accentuates the expressiveness of the facial features and allows Graner to deploy a fluid and textural painting style, particularly visible in the flame, the smoke, and the green folds of the clothing. The background is virtually eliminated, reinforcing the intimacy of the moment and the psychological presence of the subject. The subject relates to other tavern scenes and depictions of ordinary people by the artist, such as those held at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, in which the interior lighting organizes both the space and the narrative content.

Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Graner furthered his studies in Paris thanks to a scholarship from the Provincial Council and achieved particular recognition as a genre painter, though he also practiced portraiture and landscape painting. His mastery of chiaroscuro and his interest in artificial light sources found expression in his later work in set design and theater. He received awards at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, and his work is represented, among other institutions, at the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
