DESCRIPTION
European school, 19th century.
“Portrait of a Cleric.”
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 31 × 26 cm; 48 × 42 cm (frame).
The subject is depicted wearing clerical garb, seated at a desk and holding a closed book, likely related to his religious duties. The quill and inkwell complete the intellectual portrayal of the figure, while the church depicted in the background may allude to the parish or institution with which he was associated.
The composition follows the conventions of nineteenth-century official portraiture: a three-quarter view, a dark background, and a focus on the face and hands. The reddish curtain adds depth and frames the architectural view, while the subdued color palette reinforces the dignity and authority of the subject. The inclusion of personal attributes and a specific topographical reference lends the portrait added documentary interest.
