The attire and composition place this portrait within the British military tradition of the early 19th century. The officer is depicted in a three-quarter view, set within a painted oval, with a confident demeanor, resting one hand on his waist while holding his saber. The red double-breasted tunic, with a black collar and cuffs, gold epaulets, and a bicorne hat under his arm, embodies the attributes of rank and makes the uniform the primary element of representation.
The fortification and the formation of troops visible in the background expand the portrait beyond a mere effigy, linking the figure to the exercise of command and to a setting of military service. The face is rendered with meticulous attention to individual detail, while the bluish-gray tones of the landscape highlight the intense red of the tunic and the gold accents. The result combines descriptive restraint, an assertion of hierarchy, and a frontal pose characteristic of portraits of officers during the Napoleonic Wars.
