In a large format and of remarkable technical quality, Charles Louis Müller presents us with a romantic scene inspired by historicism, a genre that became widely popular in 19th-century French academic painting. In a rural setting, a young woman delicately plucks the petals from a flower while a gentleman, clad in armor and striking Renaissance-inspired garments, casts a knowing glance her way. The young woman’s gesture, traditionally associated with the games and uncertainties of love, lends the composition a suggestive narrative and sentimental element.

Charles Müller was a renowned 19th-century French portraitist and decorator, widely known by his artistic pseudonym Müller de Paris. Born during a period of great artistic effervescence, he developed an outstanding career that established him as an influential figure within the art scene of his time. He studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he perfected his technique and delved deeper into the aesthetic movements that shaped his work. Beginning in 1834, Müller began exhibiting regularly at the famous Salon de France, one of the country’s premier showcases for academic art. He participated in these exhibitions for nearly six decades, continuing this tradition uninterrupted until 1892—a testament both to the consistency of his output and to the recognition he received from the public and critics alike. Later in his career, Müller collaborated with the architect Héctor Lefebvre on an ambitious project: the transformation and beautification of the Louvre Palace during the reign of Napoleon III. In this context, he contributed his talent to the creation of the “new Louvre,” actively participating in major decorative commissions. Among his most notable works from this period are the frescoes created for the Salle d’État and the Galerie d’Apollon, as well as the ceiling decoration in the Salon Denon—spaces that still reflect the mastery of his art today. Thanks to his refined style and mastery of mural techniques, Charles Müller left a lasting mark on some of the most iconic spaces of France’s cultural heritage.
