The work up for auction is an attractive example of Edgar Bundy’s genre painting, characterized by the depiction of anecdotal episodes set in bygone eras and rendered with a strong narrative quality. The arrival of a young woman from the provinces—identifiable by her basket and attire—disrupts the tranquility of the elegant gentleman seated before her, giving rise to a scene conceived almost as a small theatrical performance. Gestures and glances drive the narrative, while the meticulous rendering of fabrics, furniture, rugs, glassware, and decorative objects—enriched by a warm palette of reds, greens, and golds—faithfully recreates the atmosphere of an 18th-century interior. The sleeping cat in the foreground adds a touch of everyday life and humor. This combination of historical setting, anecdote, theatricality, and descriptive richness is particularly characteristic of Bundy and explains the appeal of his scenes within late 19th- and early 20th-century British painting.

A painter specializing in historicist works, Edgar Bundy learned part of his craft in the studio of the painter Alfred Stevens (1817–1875) when he was a child. His style is descriptive and detailed, highly narrative, and in keeping with the historicist taste so fashionable during the Edwardian era in which he lived. Among the influences on his work are Pre-Raphaelites such as John Millais and William Morris, as well as the writings of John Ruskin. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1915 and at the Paris Salon in 1907. He also became a member of numerous art societies, including the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors and the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists. His work can currently be found at the Tate Gallery in London. As seen in this painting, Bundy often used a rich color palette that seeped into his canvas and brought his subjects to life. Critics frequently praised him for many of these elements, describing his works as “clearly defined,” “well-drawn and well-painted,” with a “skillfully composed” style that allowed for narrative coherence.
