JUAN PELÁEZ (Serandinas, Asturias, 1880 - Buenos Aires, 1937).
"Souvenir of the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Lugás (Asturias)".
Oil on hard cardboard.
Signed and titled in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 31 x 50 cm; 47 x 66 cm (frame).
In this oil painting Juan Peláez offers us a memory of the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Lugás in Asturias. For it he uses a light and fast technique that allows him to sketch, before drawing with precision, the luminous green meadow, the characters that move on horseback and on foot and the constructions that form the village and to concentrate, especially, in the atmosphere.
Although of Spanish origin, Juan Peláez developed most of his artistic career in Argentina, specifically from 1904 until his death in 1937. He trained at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, where he received classes from the painter of historical scenes José Moreno Carbonero and Antonio Muñoz Degrain, obtaining years later the title of Master of Painting and Drawing. In Argentina he worked as a draftsman in various newspapers. Currently his work can be found in the National Council of Education, in the Museum of Fine Arts of Buenos Aires, in the Asturian Center and in the Spanish Club, among other important institutions.
