This work follows the style established by the German painter Carl Spitzweg in his well-known 1862 painting titled “Die Dachkammer.” The painting depicts an attic room, with details suggesting the life of a solitary or eccentric person—a recurring theme in Spitzweg’s works. It falls within the Biedermeier style, characterized by intimate scenes and everyday details, but it also shows influences of late Romanticism and, in some respects, Impressionism—especially in his later works, with their handling of light and atmosphere.
Spitzweg, a Biedermeier painter with late Romantic and Impressionist influences, often depicted the daily life of the bourgeoisie with an ironic and detailed eye.
