Son and disciple of Francesc Gimeno i Arasa, Martí Gimeno was a painter, sculptor and art critic. He furthered his training at the Ateneo Obrero in Barcelona, and was part of the Cercle Artístic and the group Els Negres, continuation of Nonell. Before the end of the first decade of the 20th century he left Barcelona and settled in Girona, where he formed a group with the architect Rafael Masó, the writer Miquel de Palol and the painter Joan Baptista Corominas. However, in 1910 he emigrated to Argentina, possibly to avoid the military service that would take him to the war in Africa. In America he continued with painting and sculpture, approaching primitivism and expressionism. In 1935 he participated in the Exhibition of Catalan Artists held at the Casal Català in Buenos Aires, and published writings in magazines of the Catalan collective in Argentina, such as "Catalunya", as well as in the newspapers "La Razón" and "La República". He also published some articles in the magazine "Emporion", from Torroella de Montgrí, in the thirties. In fact, he never severed his ties with Catalonia, and in fact he exhibited at the Athenea Gallery in Girona in 1916 and at the Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona in 1917 and 1926. He is currently represented at the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.
