ALEXIS VAN HAMME (Brussels, 1818 - 1875).
"Lady in an interior".1869
Oil on panel.

Measurements: 72,5 x 58 cm; 87 x 73 x 6,5 cm (frame).
This delicate composition by Alexis van Hamme, a Belgian master famous for his refined interior scenes and technical virtuosity, depicts a young lady elegantly attired in a light silk dress and a burgundy velvet jacket, immersed in a domestic setting of exquisite taste.
The interior is adorned with a brocade-covered wall, a Solomonic column supporting a mantelpiece and, next to the figure, a table covered with a lace tablecloth, on which is arranged a still life consisting of a fruit bowl with grapes and apples, a crystal goblet and a porcelain pitcher. Each element is treated with meticulous realism and an almost tactile attention to textures and material qualities: the silky sheen of the fabrics, the transparency of the glass, the delicacy of the lace and the enameled glow of the porcelain.
At the feet of the protagonist, a lap dog tries to capture her attention, but the lady, self-absorbed, remains absent, with a lost look, suggesting a state of introspection or nostalgia that gives the scene a subtle poetic charge.
A painter specializing in the historical genre, Alexis Van Hamme studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp with Nicaise De Keyser and Henri Leys. His works are kept at the Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België, the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and the New York Public Library.
