Joan Abelló was a multifaceted Catalan painter and engraver whose artistic career, initiated under the landscape influence of Joaquín Mir and consolidated with masters such as Pere Pruna and Carles Pellicer, stands out for a constant evolution from post-impressionism towards a figurative expressionism of strong material and informalist charge. His work is characterized by a violent brushstroke and a chromatic explosion that he applied to his landscapes of the Vallès and the Mediterranean as well as to the visions captured in his extensive travels through Europe, Africa and America. A member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi and a passionate collector, his legacy lives on through the Joan Abelló Municipal Museum in Mollet del Vallès, as well as in institutions of international prestige such as the Vatican Museum, the MACBA and the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford.
