The composition presents organic forms and ambiguous structures that evoke mental landscapes more than real spaces. The elongated, almost biomorphic figures and the desert atmosphere of ochre and pink tones refer both to the legacy of European Surrealism, especially in its most dreamlike aspect, and to certain formulations of late Abstract Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism. The distortion of forms and spatial ambiguity suggest a symbolic universe, where the architectural and the corporeal seem to merge in a disturbing and poetic vision.
Ascribed to the European school and dated 1987, it is inscribed in the context of the pictorial reactivation that characterized the 1970s and 1980s, when many artists took up painting again as an expressive medium after the predominance of conceptualism and minimalism. The mixed technique and gestural freedom are evidence of an experimental will typical of this period, in which materials and procedures are combined to intensify the expressive charge of the image.
In this sense, the work can be read as an example of the ambiguous figuration characteristic of European painting in the eighties: a hybrid language that combines surrealist memory, expressionist gesture and material exploration, articulating a pictorial space that oscillates between the imaginary, the psychological and the abstract.
