BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school; late twentieth century.
"Venice Canal".
Oil on canvas.
Signed "R. Ukiler" in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 61 x 48 cm; 85 x 75 cm (frame).
This painting is born of the long and complex tradition of Venetian painting, which since the eighteenth century turned the lagoon city into one of the privileged motifs of European urban representation. However, far from the topographical precision of the eighteenth-century veduta, contemporary interpretations of the motif tend to privilege the subjective experience of the landscape, paying more attention to atmosphere than to detailed description.
In the context of Italian painting in the last decades of the twentieth century, the canal ceases to be a simple architectural setting and becomes a space of emotional resonance. Light, a constitutive element of Venetian identity, often assumes a structural role in the composition: reflected and fragmented on the surface of the water, it blurs contours and transforms architecture into chromatic vibration.
