ANGEL GIMENO (Alcanar, Tarragona, 1910 - 1959).
"Lake of the Pyrenees".
Oil on board.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 34 x 40 cm; 54 x 50 cm (frame).
This painting is a representative example of the landscape work of Angel Gimeno, an artist who devoted much of his production to the representation of nature and, especially, to the mountain landscapes of northern Spain. In this work, the painter presents a Pyrenean landscape dominated by a lake of calm waters that reflects the mountains and the surrounding vegetation, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The chromatic palette is based on greens and blues, applied with a loose brushstroke that recalls the influence of post-impressionism, perceptible in the treatment of light and the simplification of forms. At the same time, the artist maintains a direct observation of the landscape, typical of the realist tradition of the Catalan landscape school.
Angel Gimeno was a painter who specialized mainly in landscape painting. Throughout his career he was especially interested in rural and mountain landscapes, among them those of the Pyrenees, which appear recurrently in his production. During the 1930s he participated in several exhibitions in Catalonia. Among them was the one held in 1936 at the Sala Barcino, one of the most active exhibition spaces in the artistic Barcelona of the time.
