JULIO VAQUERO (Barcelona, 1958)
“Shadow of a Small Sculpture,” 2018.
Mixed media on paper.
Signed and dated in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 47.5 x 46 cm; 59 x 58 cm (frame).
In this work, Julio Vaquero sets the scene in an exhibition space, where frames and objects interact with the “small sculpture” and a figure cast as a shadow. The composition, rendered in shades of blue and gray, is constructed through transparencies that blur the boundaries between figure and background. The shadow acts as a trace rather than a presence. The work as a whole invites reflection on perception and the relationship between the artwork and the viewer.
Born in Barcelona, Julio Vaquero studied at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, where he was awarded the Joan Güell Prize for painting. His work, situated within the realm of contemporary figurative art, begins with the observation of reality and evolves into compositions with a strong symbolic and experimental charge.
He has exhibited in galleries and institutions in Spain, Europe, and the United States, and his work is included in collections such as those of the Vila Casas Foundation and the Museum of Modern Art in Ostend. He is currently represented by Pigment Gallery, which has driven his recent international profile.
