DESCRIPTION
EDUARDO CHILLIDA BELZUNCE (San Sebastian, 1964).
"Studio door and window", 2000.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the upper right corner.
Measurements: 65 x 92 cm.
In this piece, the artist's studio becomes a symbolic threshold where architecture is not only a physical environment, but a perceptive device that organizes the gaze. The composition is articulated from the tension between the closed structure of the interior, the space of the studio, with its objects, surfaces and material densities, and the opening towards the exterior landscape, where an urban and natural view appears framed by doors and windows. This contrast is not merely descriptive, but functions as a visual reflection on the condition of space: what is inhabited and what is contemplated, what is close and what is distant, what is intimate and what is open.
He studied Fine Arts, where he was taught by Antonio López, and also attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. Although he began in sculpture, he soon began to work in painting as well. After a traumatic motorcycle accident in 1985, Chillida moved to Madrid with his brother Luis, where he continued painting although he abandoned sculpture. The following year, in 1987, he spent several months in New York, after which he returned to San Sebastian, where in 1988 he held his first solo exhibition at the Dieciséis Gallery. Since then he has had solo exhibitions in Spain, the United States, Syria and Mexico, with a special mention for the one held in 2005 at the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian. He has also participated in group exhibitions, and is currently represented in the Artium Museum in Vitoria, the Maeda Collection in Japan, the Cano Collection in Mexico and others, both public and private.
