DESCRIPTION
JESÚS CASAUS MECHÓ (Barcelona, 1926 - 2002).
"Port with sailboats".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 66 × 80 cm; 85 × 101 cm (frame).
Port scene resolved with an expressive language and marked chromatic intensity, where the compositional structure is articulated by a plot of masts, boats and urban elements that generate a dynamic and enveloping visual rhythm. The presence of the trees in the foreground introduces a play of superimposed planes that accentuates the depth and fragments the vision of the landscape.
Casaus studied at the Baixas Academy and the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, was a disciple of Joan Serra and Luis Muntané, and later expanded his training in Paris. There he came into contact with the "fauves" experiences which, together with the strength of color of Albert Marquet (1875-1947), were the main influences for the formation of his style. In 2008 an anthological exhibition was held in his honor at the Real Círculo Artístico de Barcelona, and in Cudillero, Asturias, a national painting contest named after him has been held since 2005. In 2010 the Sala Rusiñol celebrated its XXIV Anniversary with a commemorative exhibition dedicated to his work. Jesús Casaus is represented at the MACBA.
