Scene of genre inspired in the daily life of the English rural environment, a thematic widely developed by the British painters of the XIX century. The composition places the viewer in the environment of a traditional blacksmith's shop, where a blacksmith works carefully on a horse while several characters dressed in period costume observe the scene, providing a strong narrative and costumbrista character.
This type of representation achieved great popularity in Victorian painting thanks to its ability to reflect the simple life of the countryside, the traditional work and the sense of community of small rural towns. The work stands out for its careful setting and the interest in anecdotal details: the attitude of the characters, the presence of the horse and the elements of the trade contribute to create a dynamic and close scene.
The existence of a version reproduced on Dufex sheet marketed by the English firm F.J. Warren Ltd also demonstrates the wide popular acceptance of this type of decorative images during the 20th century, especially among collectors of equestrian scenes and British genre prints.
