Antônio Carelli (1926-2021) was a prominent Brazilian artist - painter, draftsman, ceramist and mosaicist - known for his versatility in fusing realism and abstraction in his still lifes, landscapes and self-portraits.
He began his studies in 1945 in São Paulo under the guidance of Yoshiya Takaoka. In the 1950s, he moved to Paris, where he trained in drawing and painting at the Académie Julian and the Académie de La Grande Chaumière, in addition to studying with André Lhote. In 1952, he studied the Ravenna mosaic technique in Italy, becoming a recognized creator of large murals. He was the driving force behind the "Arte no Litoral" project in Brazil and left an important legacy as a teacher and cultural promoter.
