This work belongs to the important cycle of warriors and historical figures developed by Antoni Clavé beginning in the mid-1950s, in parallel with his well-known series of kings, knights, and figures with medieval overtones. In this composition, the figure of the warrior is constructed in a fragmentary and monumental manner, not as a narrative portrait, but as an emblematic, almost totemic presence, in which martial and ornamental attributes replace conventional depiction.

The spear serves as one of the main elements of iconographic identification. More than a simple accessory, it functions as a symbol of authority, defense, and combat, reinforcing the figure’s archaic and ceremonial character. The treatment of the body—barely suggested through overlapping planes, collages, dark areas, and decorative fragments—ties in with Clavé’s interest in transforming the historical image into a visual construction of great material and symbolic density.

The work fully demonstrates the mature artistic language that Clavé consolidated during these years: the use of collage, the superimposition of textures, the incorporation of ornamental elements, and a restrained palette of grays, blacks, ochres, and earth tones. These techniques, combined with the scale of the piece, give the warrior a powerful, frontal presence, reminiscent of the worlds of theater, masks, and heraldry.

The work was created during a period of particular international prominence for the artist, shortly after his exhibitions in the late 1950s and amid the consolidation of his artistic language, which straddled symbolic figuration and material informism.

Antoni Clavé was one of the central figures of postwar Catalan art. Based in Paris since 1939, he developed an international career as a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and set designer. His work is represented in institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the MACBA, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
