DESCRIPTION

JEAN CHAPIN (1896–1954).
“Le Tréport.”
Oil on panel.

Signed and titled in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 41.5 x 55 cm.
Jean Chapin was a French painter and lithographer associated with the leading Parisian artistic circles of the first half of the 20th century. Trained at the École Boulle and later at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Chapin’s career was marked by his participation in prominent art exhibitions such as the Salon des Indépendants, of which he was a member since 1919, the Salon d’Automne, and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Throughout his career, he explored various genres, including the nude, still life, Parisian urban scenes, and, in particular, seascapes of Normandy and Brittany. Places such as Le Tréport, the Chausey Islands, and various Breton ports became recurring motifs in his paintings, as he was drawn to the power of the Atlantic coast, the ever-changing atmosphere of the seashore, and the effects of light on the sea.
This composition depicts a view of the port of Le Tréport, a historic fishing village on the Normandy coast. Chapin does not merely describe the place with topographical precision but interprets it through a sensibility close to figurative expressionism. The forms are rendered through energetic brushwork and a solid compositional structure, while the painterly texture and vibrant color harmonies convey the activity and character of the harbor setting. His pictorial language combines direct observation of reality with a deeply personal vision, in which the landscape becomes a vehicle for emotion and atmosphere.
