This painting is a magnificent example of Palau Ferré’s mastery in depicting the female figure, a central and recurring theme throughout his entire artistic career. The work fully reflects the artistic language that earned him a prominent place in the Catalan art scene of the 20th century: a unique synthesis of Cubist and Fauvist influences and a poetic figurative style deeply rooted in the Mediterranean spirit. Although a heir to the Picassian tradition, Palau Ferré was able to develop his own artistic personality, characterized by an intense chromatic sensibility and a close connection to Catalan cultural identity.

Palau Ferré was a Catalan painter trained in Barcelona and Paris, where he came into contact with the historical avant-garde movements. An admirer of Matisse, Picasso, and Rouault, he developed a style of his own, marked by intense color, formal simplification, and a direct, emotive style of painting.

Beginning in the 1950s, he achieved great popularity, both in Catalonia and on the international market. However, a legal dispute with a dealer, who sought to appropriate his future work, led the artist to take a radical step: he gradually abandoned commercial painting and went so far as to destroy a large portion of his own work, becoming an almost legendary figure.

Today, Palau Ferré is considered a unique figure in 20th-century Spanish art, valued both for the aesthetic coherence of his work and for the expressive power of his compositions.
