DESCRIPTION
DIONÍS BAIXERAS I VERDAGUER (Barcelona, 1862–1943).
"Boat and Fisherman."
Oil on canvas.
Signed.
Measurements: 16 x 28.5 cm; 31.5 x 42 cm (frame).
A coastal scene with a highly economical composition, centered on a boat beached near the shore and the figure of a fisherman leaning over it. The composition opens out toward a clear, tranquil seascape, barely interrupted by a distant sail and small boats, lending the scene a serene atmosphere, suspended between everyday activity and the stillness of the landscape.
Baixeras renders the boat using curved planes of white, ochre, and pink, while the figure of the fisherman blends into a dark, greenish smudge, more implied than depicted. The sea and sky, rendered in pale tones with light brushstrokes, convey a sense of expansiveness and tranquility. Far from being a mere anecdotal depiction, the scene is constructed as an intimate impression of seafaring life.
Dionís Baixeras i Verdaguer was a naturalist painter and draftsman, trained at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona, where he studied under artists such as Ramon Martí Alsina and Antoni Caba. His work is characterized by a focus on scenes of everyday life, rural and seafaring settings, landscapes, and themes inspired by social and folk customs. He was one of the founders of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. His work is represented in institutions such as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museo Nacional del Prado, and the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer, among other public collections.
