LUIS CLARAMUNT (Barcelona, 1951–Zarautz, 2000).
"Bullfighting."
Oil on canvas.

Measurements: 81 x 100.5 cm; 95 x 115.5 cm (frame).
Luis Claramunt approaches the bullfighting motif through a gestural, stripped-down style of painting with a strong expressive power. The composition is set against an earthy yellow background, almost scorched, from which the bull’s head, the bullfighter’s profile, and the vertical line of the lance or bullfighting instrument emerge in fragments. The work condenses the tension of the bullfight into a few key elements: the animal’s curved line, the spectral presence of the human figure, and the dark stroke that cuts across the space.
Claramunt works the surface with glazes, scraping, and smudges that reveal the texture of the canvas, creating a rough, dry, almost mineral-like atmosphere. The blues and greens that outline the forms seem absorbed by the yellowish background, as if the scene were emerging from dust, light, and memory. Bullfighting thus becomes an essentialized motif, reduced to gesture, tension, and presence.
The work is part of Claramunt’s artistic universe, marked by an intense, free, and marginal figuration, where popular themes—the city, travel, flamenco, boxing, the sea, or bullfighting—are filtered through an existential and deeply pictorial gaze.
Luis Claramunt was one of the most distinctive figures in Spanish painting of the second half of the 20th century. Distant from academic circles, he developed a highly personal body of work, rooted in direct experience of the streets, ports, working-class neighborhoods, and lived landscapes. His artistic language combines expressionism, gesturalism, and a poetic sensibility rooted in the urban environment. His work is represented in institutions such as the MACBA in Barcelona, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), among other public collections.
