DESCRIPTION
MIGUEL ÁNGEL CAMPANO (Madrid, 1948 – Cercedilla, Madrid, 2018)
Untitled.
Collage on paper.
Measurements: 23.5 x 25 cm.
Miguel Ángel Campano creates a composition of great restraint using cut-out and overlapping shapes. The black areas, with their striking presence, are balanced by the large light shape above and subtle ochre accents, generating an image of strong visual tension despite its small size.
Here, Campano explores essential aspects of his artistic language: outline, plane, void, texture, and rhythm. The cutting process functions not merely as a technical procedure, but as a way of conceiving painting from the perspective of its material limits.
Miguel Ángel Campano was a key figure in the renewal of Spanish painting during the 1970s and 1980s. His work is characterized by constant experimentation between abstraction and figuration, modern tradition and personal style, with references to artists such as José Guerrero, Cézanne, and Poussin.
In 1996, he received the National Prize for the Visual Arts. The Reina Sofía Museum dedicated a major retrospective to him in 1999, and in 2019, the exhibition *Miguel Ángel Campano. D’après. His work is represented in collections such as the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, the IVAM, ARTIUM, the Centre Pompidou, and the Bank of Spain Collection, among others.
