DESCRIPTION
TOTA JUÁREZ (Lima, 1946).
Untitled, 2006.
Mixed media on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 61 x 50 cm.
Trained at the School of Art of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, she studied under the artist Adolfo Winternitz, a key figure in the renewal of Peruvian art education. From the earliest years of her artistic practice, Juárez showed an interest in artistic exploration and in finding a balance between structure and gestural freedom, developing a body of work that brings together pre-Hispanic references, organic forms, and a deeply contemporary sensibility.
Throughout her career, the artist has explored different artistic languages and phases, ranging from abstract works linked to the ancestral forms of the Peruvian coast to more recent explorations involving new technologies and the digital image. Her painting is characterized by the presence of symbols, suggested geometries, textured surfaces, and compositions that seem to emerge from a symbolic universe of her own. In her compositions, forms do not function as mere decorative elements, but rather as fragments of a visual language that references ancient cultures such as those of Paracas and Nazca, reinterpreted through a personal and contemporary lens.
Tota Juárez’s career has been marked by constant evolution. Her stays in various cities across the Americas helped broaden her artistic vision and enrich her ever-evolving visual vocabulary. Exhibitions such as *The Blue Impulse* in New York (2004) and *Desnudez de los laberintos* in Madrid (2006) reflect the international reach of an artist who always maintained a close relationship with research and experimentation.
