ANTONI CLAVÉ (Barcelona, 1913 – Saint-Tropez, France, 2005).
Untitled.
Mixed media and collage on paper.
Signed.
Measurements: 41.5 x 32.5 cm.
In this work, Antoni Clavé structures the composition through a layering of papers, glazes, and areas of intense chromatic density, dominated by blacks, earth tones, reds, and off-whites. The collage functions here not merely as a technical device, but as a constructive structure: the torn fragments, the stains, and the stamped forms create a surface charged with tension, reminiscent of a wall, a vestige, or an archaeological object.
The circular signs, imprints, and heraldic-looking elements refer to Clavé’s most characteristic vocabulary, where matter, memory, and symbol intertwine. The work retains a strong tactile presence: each layer seems to conceal and reveal at the same time, creating an image that unfolds slowly, in which the material takes on an almost ritualistic dimension. The reds, concentrated like focal points of energy, introduce a dramatic vibration that is a hallmark of the dark backgrounds.
Antoni Clavé was one of the most prominent Catalan figures in European art during the second half of the 20th century. Trained in Barcelona, he built a significant international career based in Paris, where he evolved from set design and illustration toward a material and symbolic pictorial language. His work is represented in institutions such as the Reina Sofía Museum, the MNAC, the MACBA, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the British Museum.
