Planells held his first solo exhibition in the 1930s, and in 1936, at the invitation of André Breton, he was part of the group selected for the First International Exhibition of Surrealism, held at the New Burlington Galleries in London. After the war, Planells stripped his style of surrealist elements and continued to hold solo exhibitions in Barcelona, Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Verona, Paris, and New York. Most of his work is housed at the Ángel Planells Foundation in Blanes, but it is also represented at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Gala-Dalí Foundation, and in prestigious collections such as those of André Breton and Luis Buñuel.
