In this work, Tom Wesselmann reduces one of his most recognizable motifs—the cigarette—to an almost sculptural presence, constructed through clean planes, intense color, and a composition of great formal economy. The small format does not diminish its impact; on the contrary, it focuses attention on the contrast between the rising curve of the smoke/cigarette, the blue base of the ashtray, and the orange accent, creating a direct, elegant image with great graphic power.

The piece ties into the artist’s characteristic vocabulary, as he is interested in isolating everyday objects and transforming them into visual icons of contemporary culture. As in his famous still lifes and domestic scenes, Wesselmann eliminates the superfluous and works with sharp silhouettes, flat colors, and a cool sensuality—akin to advertising design yet laden with irony. The cigarette, a recurring motif in his work, appears here as a symbol of desire, consumption, and transience.

Dated 2000, the work belongs to the artist’s final period, when Wesselmann revisited his major themes with an increasingly refined formal synthesis. The use of collage and Liquitex acrylic on Bristol board reinforces that tension between image, object, and surface, so characteristic of his mature work.

Tom Wesselmann was one of the key figures of American Pop Art, alongside Warhol, Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, and Rosenquist. His work is included in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
