DESCRIPTION

BENJAMÍN PALENCIA (Barrax, Albacete, 1894 – Madrid, 1980).
“Camino de Santa Teresa,” 1976.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.

Work verified by Ramón Palencia del Burgo, director of the Benjamín Palencia Archive.
Measurements: 60 x 81 cm; 84 x 105 cm (frame).

Dated 1976, this painting belongs to Benjamín Palencia’s final period, when the Castilian landscape—the essential core of his entire career—took on a particularly free, luminous, and textural form. Without abandoning the modern conception of the landscape developed through his experience at the Vallecas School, the artist intensified the color and the gestural quality of his brushstrokes, transforming nature into an autonomous pictorial construction.

The path referred to in the title serves as the compositional axis and organizes the succession of planes among the compact masses of trees. The vegetation, the terrain, and the sky are articulated through dense brushstrokes and hallmarks of great intensity, in which dark greens and blues contrast with orange earth tones and bright yellows. The simplification of forms does not stem from a lack of observation, but rather from a desire to condense the landscape into rhythms, texture, and color—a hallmark of the painter’s mature work.

The work exemplifies the continuity and transformation of one of Palencia’s major themes: the Spanish inland landscape, interpreted not as a descriptive setting but as a space for artistic experimentation. Its format, the breadth of the composition, and the energy of the execution clearly reveal the vitality his painting achieved during the 1970s.

Benjamín Palencia was a key figure in the renewal of 20th-century Spanish landscape painting. He participated in the 1925 Exhibition of Iberian Artists and, alongside Alberto Sánchez, spearheaded the Vallecas School, through which he proposed a new interpretation of the Castilian plateau linked to avant-garde artistic languages. His work is represented in the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, the Albacete Museum, and the Bank of Spain Collection, among other institutions.
