Created in 1990, the work belongs to a period of Jean-Charles Blais’s full international consolidation. Since the early 1980s, the artist had been developing a figurative style executed on salvaged materials, particularly torn-down advertising posters, whose tears, layers, and imperfections he actively incorporated into the image. The choice of a steel plate here extends this focus on used supports and surfaces laden with material traces.

Against the green background, which is partially eroded, black strokes delineate a monumental human figure that is difficult to reduce to a single interpretation. The image emerges from an extreme economy of means: sweeping curves, areas of pictorial concentration, and lines that extend to the edges of the support. This simplification of anatomy, akin to a silhouette, is characteristic of Blais’s artistic language, which centers on the transformation and fragmentation of the human figure.

The irregular profile of the upper edge intensifies the piece’s object-like quality and corresponds to the importance Blais typically attaches to the irregularities and boundaries of the support. Since the early 1980s, the artist has worked with torn posters and other salvaged materials, whose tears and layers shape the configuration of his figures. In this work, paint and steel are visually integrated into a single surface.

Jean-Charles Blais studied at the School of Fine Arts in Rennes and first gained recognition in the early 1980s. In 1987, he had a solo exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou, and in 1990, he created an installation at the Assemblée Nationale metro station in Paris. His work is included in collections such as the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate.
