Throughout José Manuel Broto’s career (Zaragoza, 1949), painting has never been a mere exercise in representation, but rather a realm where material, gesture, and color acquire an almost physical autonomy. This work is a magnificent example of that sustained exploration spanning more than four decades, in which the artist has progressively reduced narrative elements to concentrate all expressive intensity on the pictorial experience itself. This ability to transform a seemingly simple image into a complex visual experience is one of Broto’s most characteristic traits. The work eschews any anecdotal interpretation, placing the viewer in an ambiguous space where the painting becomes a field of evocations. The traces can be understood as remnants of a journey, as fleeting presences, or as primitive signs inscribed on a surface imbued with time.
José Manuel Broto is one of the leading figures in contemporary Spanish abstraction. In 1973, he co-founded the Trama Group, alongside Javier Rubio, Xavier Grau, and Gonzalo Tena—a collective that played a decisive role in the revival of painting as an autonomous language within the Spanish art scene during the Transition. Among his most significant exhibitions are those held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), the IVAM (Valencia), the Museo Patio Herreriano (Valladolid), the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (Seville), the MACBA (Barcelona), as well as numerous exhibitions at leading galleries such as Soledad Lorenzo, Carles Taché, Marlborough, and Miguel Marcos. In 1995, he was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts. He has also received other important institutional honors, including the Aragón-Goya Prize.
His work is included in prominent public and private collections, including the Reina Sofía National Art Museum (Madrid), the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), the IVAM (Valencia), the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (Seville), the Patio Herreriano Museum (Valladolid), the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Bank of Spain Collection, the “la Caixa” Foundation Collection, the Helga de Alvear Collection, and numerous institutional and private collections both in Spain and abroad.
