In this work, Alois Mosbacher invites the viewer to enter a landscape that seems to hover between reality and memory. A large tree trunk dominates the composition, while barely suggested forms—resting on the ground or silhouettes fading into gray glazes—emerge and vanish in a dense, silent atmosphere. The scene defies any unambiguous narrative interpretation and instead offers a contemplative experience in which nature, the body, and space seem to merge into a single pictorial substance. Created in 1984, the work belongs to the artist’s early mature period, at a time when Mosbacher was beginning to develop a highly personal language within Central European painting. Although chronologically his generation coincides with the rise of Neo-Expressionism, his work distances itself from the gestural violence characteristic of many of his contemporaries to construct more introspective images like this one, where drawing, atmosphere, and suggestion take center stage.
Alois Mosbacher is one of the most prominent painters on the contemporary Austrian art scene. He studied from 1973 to 1978 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien), where he was a student of Max Melcher. Since the late 1970s, he has developed a body of work centered on the relationship between nature, perception, and memory, establishing a pictorial language of great poetic power. His work has been featured in major international institutions and events, including the São Paulo Biennial (1985), the Venice Biennale (1988, representing Austria alongside Herbert Brandl), and numerous exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna (MUMOK), the Neue Galerie Graz, and the Kunsthalle Krems, among other European institutions. In 1990, he received the Preis der Stadt Wien für Bildende Kunst (City of Vienna Prize for the Visual Arts) and, in 2003, the prestigious Großer Österreichischer Staatspreis, the highest artistic honor awarded by the Austrian government. His work is included in prominent public collections, including the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, MUMOK, the Albertina, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and numerous institutional collections in Austria and Germany.
