The Valencian painter Juan Rivelles worked in various genres, though he specialized in landscape painting. He trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in his hometown, and throughout his career he exhibited his work on numerous occasions, primarily in official competitions. He was awarded third prize at the 1934 National Fine Arts Exhibition for his work “La calabaza roja.” He also produced drawings and watercolors, such as those belonging to a series of historical suits of armor dating from 1920 to 1934. The son of the renowned theater actors Jaime Rivelles and Amparo Guillén, his brother, Rafael Rivelles (1897–1971), was a prominent film actor of the time. Juan Rivelles’s work is currently on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Castellón (the piece is owned by the Prado Museum, affiliated with the MNCARS) and at the National Library of Spain.
