As we can see in “Metaphysical Boats,” Arturo Souto was one of the most original figures of the Spanish artistic renewal of the first half of the 20th century. As part of the brilliant generation of painters linked to the avant-garde movements, he developed a deeply personal artistic language where Expressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the European movements that emerged around the School of Paris converge. Unlike other artists of his generation, Souto never limited himself to reproducing visible reality; rather, he used color and texture as vehicles for emotional expression.

Ports, boats, and seascapes are recurring themes in his work. Rather than depicting a specific location, these compositions explore the evocative power of the landscape and its symbolic potential. The sea appears as a space of transit, memory, and freedom, while boats serve as metaphors for travel, exile, and the human condition—themes that took on special resonance following the Civil War and his subsequent exile in Mexico.

Arturo Souto Feijoo is one of the leading figures in 20th-century Galician and Spanish painting. Trained at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, he quickly became part of the avant-garde art circles, participating in the major national and international exhibitions of his time. He maintained close ties with the Vallecas School and with numerous writers and intellectuals of the Generation of ’27, developing a style of painting characterized by chromatic intensity, gestural freedom, and an extraordinary richness of texture. After the Civil War, he went into exile in Mexico, where he continued his intense artistic activity without ever losing his emotional connection to Galicia and the Atlantic landscape. His work is held in such prominent institutions as the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, the Museum of Pontevedra, the Quiñones de León Museum in Vigo, the Museum of Fine Arts in A Coruña, and numerous public and private collections in Spain and the Americas.
