Héctor Catá Álvarez was one of the most representative Cuban painters of contemporary figurative art, recognized for a body of work deeply rooted in the island’s cultural identity, as seen in this painting. Trained at the prestigious San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1972, he developed from the outset a pictorial language with a distinct personality, characterized by intense chromatic richness, solid draftsmanship, and a poetic interpretation of Cuban reality. His painting, influenced by Creole Baroque and figurative expressionism, depicts landscapes, scenes of everyday life, and ordinary people that evoke the memories, traditions, and daily life of Cuba.
In addition to his work as a painter, he was actively involved in teaching and cultural management. He taught at the San Alejandro School itself and at the Amelia Peláez ceramics workshop and gallery, in addition to serving as artistic director of Lenin Park in Havana and leading the Versión Paisaje group, dedicated to the study and practice of landscape painting in Cuba. His prestige led to his selection as an exclusive artist for ARTEX S.A., the organization responsible for the international promotion of Cuban art.
Throughout his extensive career, he participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Europe, and Latin America, establishing an international presence that placed his work in major public and private collections. In 1975, he won First Prize for Painting at the Provincial Youth Salon, and, alongside his work as a painter, he created posters and commemorative images for cultural events of national significance. His painting, always faithful to the essence of his country, transformed landscapes, colonial architecture, and folk customs into symbols of a Cuba evoked through sensitivity and memory. Considered one of the great interpreters of the Cuban painting tradition, Héctor Catá left an artistic legacy that continues to occupy a prominent place within the contemporary Latin American art scene.
