As a painter and illustrator, José Ignacio Burguete trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid between 1945 and 1950. During the 1950s, he began his career working as an artist in advertising, illustration, and interior design. At the same time, in 1956, he began to devote himself to portraiture and painting in general, spending more and more time on this activity until he finally left illustration behind to focus entirely on painting. In 1960, he joined the Spanish Watercolorists’ Association of Madrid and the Association of Painters and Sculptors, and in 1964 he held his first solo exhibition, marking the beginning of a long exhibition career that would lead him to hold more than seventy exhibitions of his work. His work as a portraitist deserves special mention, as Burguete has painted portraits of prominent figures such as ministers, provincial council presidents, and other politicians, as well as leading business executives. He has also painted several portraits of King Juan Carlos I, the most important of which is currently housed at the Montjuic Palace, donated by the Armed Forces.
