DESCRIPTION
JOSEP BAQUÉS (Montmeló, Barcelona, 1931–2021)
“Equus marítim.”
Mixed media and collage on panel.
Signed in the lower right corner, titled on the reverse.
Measurements: 35 x 19 cm; 54 x 38 cm (frame).
The work belongs to the universe of surrealist fables that defines Josep Baqués’s mature period, characterized by the coexistence of stylized figures, animals, and natural elements transformed into poetic symbols. The white horse anchors a vertical composition in which the terrestrial realm gradually transforms into a marine and fantastical space.
Self-taught, Baqués began his professional career in graphic design and was one of the founders of Grafistas FAD in 1961. Since his first painting exhibition, held in Barcelona in 1968, he has worked in parallel in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. His work is distinguished by an imaginative language close to surrealism and by a rigorous pursuit of compositional balance. His work is part of the Fundació Vila Casas collection.
