BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JOAN SARQUELLA OLIVERAS (Palamós, Girona, 1956)
“Palma de Mallorca.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner and signed and titled on the reverse.
Measurements: 60 x 73 cm; 78 x 90 cm (frame).

The panoramic view of the Bay of Palma allows Joan Sarquella to combine the two essential motifs of his painting: the seascape and Mediterranean urban architecture. The city’s silhouette, dominated by the cathedral, stretches into the distance as a monumental counterpoint to the expanse of the harbor, which becomes the true focal point of the composition.

Sarquella prioritizes atmospheric impression over meticulous detail, capturing the relationship between the harbor, the city, and the changing light of the sky. The combination of blues, mauves, and salmon tones transforms the urban view into a serene and luminous chromatic interpretation, consistent with his dedication to the Catalan and Mediterranean coastal landscape.

Trained in Barcelona while attending drawing and painting classes with Gloria Puigdengolas, Joan Sarquella has developed a body of work focused primarily on seascapes, harbors, and coastal towns. He has presented his work in exhibitions held in Palamós, Girona, Barcelona, Olot, La Seu d’Urgell, and Lisbon.
