BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

WILLIAM DAVIES (United Kingdom, active between 1890 and 1910)
“On the Shore of Loch Long, Argyllshire,” 1891.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Titled on the reverse.
Measurements: 34 × 49 cm; 57 × 71.5 cm (frame).

The work belongs to the most characteristic theme of William Davies, who specialized in mountainous landscapes of Scotland and the Lake District, frequently populated by flocks of sheep and herds of cattle. In this composition, the artist combines the vastness of the landscape with a pastoral scene: several head of cattle gather by the water, while a shepherd leads his flock along the path on the far left.

Lighting is the painting’s primary expressive element. The clouds cast broad shadows over the valley, contrasting with the golden light that falls on the hillsides and reveals their contours. Davies alternates precise rendering of the animals and figures with a freer, more atmospheric brushstroke in the sky, the mountains, and the reflections on the lake, achieving a convincing sense of depth despite the compact format.

William Davies’s work focused particularly on the Highlands—with numerous scenes set in Argyllshire—rendered in the Victorian landscape tradition and with special attention to changes in light and the naturalistic observation of animals.
