The inscription preserved on the reverse allows the landscape to be precisely identified as a view of the hillsides of Loch Etive in Argyllshire. The work brings together William Davies’s characteristic motifs: the vastness of the Scottish mountain landscape, sheep scattered in the foreground, and a natural world defined by shifts in light and atmospheric variations. Scenes from the Highlands featuring livestock and flocks appear repeatedly in his documented body of work.

The composition opens from the lakeshore toward a succession of mountains partially shrouded in clouds. The golden light on the hillsides is a hallmark of contrast with the shaded areas, and it draws the eye toward the depths of the valley.
