This blend of the everyday and the marvelous is one of the most distinctive features of Gonzalo Endara Crow’s artistic universe. The artist takes Andean landscapes and towns—their vernacular architecture and the life of their communities—as his starting point, transforming them through his boundless imagination. In this work, the train takes center stage, as it was a recurring motif in his body of work, inspired by his father’s job on the railroad. Color is essential to achieving this effect. The intense blues of the sky and mountains are hallmarks of contrast with the ochres and oranges of the hillsides and the explosion of colors in the houses. This vibrant palette, together with the detailed rendering of the small architectural figures, gives the work an almost fantastical appearance that is deeply recognizable within Endara Crow’s body of work.
Gonzalo Endara Crow studied at the School of Arts at the Central University of Ecuador and subsequently developed an essentially personal artistic career. His work gained significant international recognition and was featured in exhibitions across the Americas and Europe. Among other honors, he received silver medals at the Swiss International Naïve Painting Prize and the Trebnje Naïve Artists’ Congress, as well as the First Audience Choice Award at the First Havana Biennial. His works are part of collections and museums in Latin America, the United States, and Europe, establishing him as one of the most distinctive figures in 20th-century Ecuadorian art.
