The most distinctive feature of this painting is the subtle incisions and three-dimensional folds that transform the canvas and break up the rigidity of the composition. These organic forms introduce an almost sculptural dimension, creating a delicate interplay of light and shadow. The predominance of white and light grays reinforces this interplay and accentuates the reliefs, creating a surface that appears minimalist yet is full of nuances and depth.
Leopoldo Nóvoa, a painter and sculptor of Galician and Uruguayan descent, emigrated to Uruguay in 1938, where he came into contact with Joaquín Torres García and later with artists such as Jorge Oteiza and Lucio Fontana, whose influence was decisive in his work. In 1965, he moved to Paris, where he spent much of his career and associated with figures such as Michel Tapié and Julio Cortázar. Nóvoa was awarded prizes such as the Castelao Medal (1993), the City of Pontevedra Prize (1997), and the Galicia Critics’ Prize (2002). His work is currently represented in the Abanca and Caixanova collections, among others.
