This still life is defined by a composition of intense visual impact in which Jorge Castillo displays one of the most personal aspects of his pictorial language, based on the construction of an everyday reality that, through color and geometry, takes on an almost dreamlike dimension.
The son of Spanish immigrants in Argentina, Jorge Castillo returned to Spain in 1957 and soon became part of Madrid’s art circles. In 1958, he began selling his drawings at the Biosca Gallery and gradually shifted his focus to printmaking as his primary medium of expression, without abandoning painting. In 1960, he was selected for the São Paulo Biennial, marking the beginning of an international career that led him to exhibit in galleries and museums in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Paris, Lisbon, Turin, Hanover, Düsseldorf, and Geneva. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1964 and 1976, and in 1970, the Nationalgalerie in Berlin dedicated a solo exhibition to him—the first major museum exhibition focused on a specific period of his career. His career was recognized with major awards, including the Darmstadt International Prizes for Drawing and Painting, the City of Pontevedra Prize, and the Cultura Viva Prize for the Visual Arts. His work is represented in prominent international collections, including those of the Guggenheim in New York, the Albertina in Vienna, the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, and the Museums of Modern Art in San Francisco and Vitoria.
